International Women’s Day calls for more gender equality
International Women’s Day is celebrated across the globe on the 8th of March. The theme of this year focused on "Women in the Changing World of Work: Planet 50-50 by 2030". Along with 17 other women and men, the Director of IUCN, Mrs. Inger Andersen was recognised as a Gender and Environment Advocate, in acknowledgment of her individual commitments and contributions to the advancement and support of gender issues. 
Introducing Ramsar Regional Initiative for Central Asia (RRI-CA)
After the agreement of Central Asian Contracting Parties on establishment of the Ramsar Regional Initiative for Central Asia (RRI-CA), it was endorsed by the 52nd Ramsar Standing Committee in June 2016. Currently Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan are members of the Initiative.
The Baltic Sea - the Territory of Sustainable Development
The 18th International Environmental Forum "Baltic Sea Day", which has already become a traditional event for St. Petersburg, was held on 22-23 March 2017. The main theme of the event was the relationship between sustainable development goals and environmental strategies at the global, regional and local levels with a focus on how to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 14 "Conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development".
Launch of BalkaNatureNet
During the weekend of Earth Day 2017 celebrations, over 80 individuals  gathered in a tour-day Forum and launched the BalkaNatureNet network, set up to become a transnational meeting point for all individuals working in the fields of nature conservation and education for sustainable development (ESD) in the Balkan region and adjacent countries.

NatureForAll receives an Award of Excellence at the IndieFEST    
“Imagine #NatureForAll” video receives an Award of Excellence at the IndieFEST! In the words of the jury “this beautiful and moving short flows with the music and inspires the viewers with artful simplicity.” Congratulations to the IUCN Commission on Education and Communication! Read more
IUCN recognised as an Intergovernmental Organization



The German government has officially recognised IUCN as an intergovernmental organisation, reaffirming the Union’s important role on the global environmental and development stage. On 10th March the German upper house (Bundesrat) gave its consent to the Cabinet’s regulation which recognises IUCN as an “organisation created by intergovernmental agreement”. Read more



VALUING AND CONSERVING NATURE
The future of Divjaka-Karavasta National Park under threat

The Mediterranean Wetlands Alliance sent an open letter on the 26th April 2017 to the Prime Minister of Albania, Mr. Edi Rama, and the Minister of Environment, Mr. Lefter Koka, expressing concern about the Master Plan “Resort Divjakë Albania” and its planned developments, underlining their potential negative impacts on the Karavasta National Park and its natural heritage. Read more

Camera-trap in Georgia spots IUCN Red-List Species
Camera–traps installed in the forests of Lagodekhi Protected Areas in the mountains of Eastern Georgia have caught images of an unexpected visitor, sparking cautious optimism for biodiversity in the region. The camera traps, installed by local biodiversity NGO NACRES, and funded by Protected Areas financing mechanism, the Caucasus Nature Fund (CNF), were intended to monitor the number of East Caucasian Tur in the area, but in late January, one of the traps caught images of a lone Bezoar Goat – an IUCN Red-List species hitherto unknown in Lagodekhi. Read more

New migration atlas created to reduce threats to wildlife in Central Asia
Experts have for the first time mapped the distribution of migratory mammals and potential threats from linear infrastructure across Central Asia. This includes railways, roads, pipelines, and border fences. The atlas features the distribution of the ten most affected species in ten countries and the constructed and planned infrastructure. It will help to better inform decision makers to consider migratory species when planning any kind of infrastructure.
A new life for bat species in abandoned bunkers and tunnels in Albania

On the World Wildlife Day 22nd March a former military building Bunk’Art opened its doors for the unique Bat Expo “Bunkers: Shelters of Biodiversity”, on the occasion of World Wildlife Day celebrated worldwide on 3 March. The exhibition is a result of the cooperation of the EU funded project NaturAL, the National Agency of Protected Areas (NAPA) and Bunk’Art, and aims to inspire the decision-makers and each individual to take action to protect the wildlife. 
A brown bear wakes up in Montenegro

With the coming of springtime much of the nature wakes up after the period of hibernation. A brown bear (Ursus arctos) is recorded on camera trap in one of the last European virgin forests in National Park Biogradska Gora, northern Montenegro. Read more

An interview with a botanist  
Supported by the EU funded project NaturAL, the rangers and monitoring specialists from the Regional Administration of Protected Areas are learning about botanical field research. They are led by a team of experts, one of which is Michele De Sanctis from the Department of Environmental Biology, Sapienza University of Rome. We had the pleasure to meet Michele and learn about his work. Read more
GOVERNANCE OF NATURE'S USE
Transboundary management of Skadar Lake

The project Supporting the Long-Term Sustainable Management of Transboundary Lake Skadar was instrumental in improving the conservation and protection status of Lake Skadar as one of 44 priority key biodiversity areas in the Mediterranean. After three years of successful implementation, between 2013 and 2016, project results and outputs are multiple. Read more   
Albania’s Parliament approves Law on “Protected Areas”
Albania’s Parliament gathered in plenary session approved today by 75 votes in favor the draft law “On Protected Areas”. The draft law aims to improve the current legal framework on protected areas as indispensability to increased demands for management and protection of these territories as well as in the face of an amended European legislation. Read more
Law on Nature protection prepared in FYR Macedonia

Within the successfully completed EU IPA funded project "Capacity building for implementation of Natura 2000”, alongside introduction of the concept of the EU ecological network Natura 2000, the new Law on Nature Protection and sub-regulations have been prepared. In order to harmonize national legislation and fulfil obligations under EU Directives on habitats and birds, the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning of FYR Macedonia began the project in 2016, and used it as an opportunity to transfer experience from EU member states and to establish and develop the Natura 2000 network. Read more

Georgia and Azerbaijan Share Rivers and Plans for a Water Rich Future

Integrated water resources management (IWRM) will be the key to countries surviving and thriving under the threat of climate change. The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan and Ministry of Environment and Natural Resource Protection in Georgia are leading the way to harmonize and maximize the greatest benefits from their shared water resources in the Kura Basin. Read more

Environmental protection in the business community of South Caucasus
CENN has been implementing a regional project: Promoting Environmental and Social Accountability in the Mining Sector in the Caucasus, aiming to reduce poverty, enhance environmental education and awareness, enhance environmental and social security related to mining activities and foster sustainable rural development. 
DEPLOYING NATURE-BASED SOLUTIONS
Scoping Studies on Ecosystem Services for DRR and CCA

As part of the ongoing efforts to strengthen application of Nature based Solutions in South Eastern Europe ECARO is conducting two Scoping Studies on Ecosystem Services and their role in Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation, one for Albania and another one for Serbia. Scoping Studies, identified by those two countries, are a part of prioritised actions for nature conservation.  Planned activities are designed to improve knowledge on ecosystems, their services and roles, and their contribution to prevention activities in disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation. Read more


Healthy ecosystems as a human right
IUCN welcomes a recent report of the UN Special Rapporteur on Environment and Human Rights, Prof. John Knox, which highlights how biodiversity and ecosystems are essential to human rights.

2016 Annual report IUCN ECARO

Learn about the yearly activities of IUCN ECARO, the youngest IUCN regional office. It was established in 2015 to support IUCN constituency and implement the IUCN Programme in most countries of the IUCN Statutory Region East Europe, North and Central Asia. The office is based in Belgrade, Serbia. The report is available here
The Gray Whales Commission releases Russian Arctic fact-sheet
The release of the Russian Arctic fact-sheet has been initiated and facilitated through IUCN agreement with the UNDP/GEF-Russian Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology project “Mainstreaming biodiversity in Russia’s energy sector practice and policy”. Among other activities the fact-sheet also includes a reference to the key portion of our collaboration in developing the industry guidelines to minimize risks to marine mammals during industrial activities.  Read more
 

PARKS new release: PA benefits in the Dinaric Arc, by WWF Adria

The International Journal of Protected Areas and Conservation is published by IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA). This issue of PARKS offers a perspective on the role of Biosphere Reserves in helping to meet the Sustainable Development Goals, a decision support tool for better resource allocation for threatened species, a paper on the values of protected areas (PAs) in the Dinaric Arc in Europe one on the practical implementation of innovative financial mechanisms to support PAs in Africa.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Tethys Scientific Society, Kazahstan re-joins IUCN         
Tethys Scientific Society promotes not only nature conservation outside of the city boundaries, but it is keen to help people who try to bring nature to the city. For this purpose Tethys teamed up with UNESCO Chair for Sustainable Development at Kazakh National University and Kazakhstan’s UNESCO MAB Committee to carry out a social project “Plant a garden!” which aims to support people who plant flowers and gardens in public spaces. 

EUROPARC's WEBINARs: Working together in Sustainable Destinations
As a celebration of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, declared by the United Nations for 2017, EUROPARC is organising a series of 3 webinars in April, May and June are organised on the topic of Sustainable Tourism in Protected Areas. 


Green funding opportunities in Russia
The first International Conference on “Green financing” in frames of the “St. Petersburg Initiative” will be held in Moscow on 18th May 2017 at the premises of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation. Species conservation expert vacancy at IUCN
  
IUCN ECARO is hiring a species conservation expert with strong background in Red List development. This is a very exciting post as it entails work on IUCN conservation knowledge products, capacity development and conservation priority setting. The deadline for applications is 25th May.
